Firefighting history preserved

A crucial part of Vernon’s firefighting history won’t be turned into scrap metal.

City council will turn over ownership of a 1946 Bickle ladder truck to the Vernon Volunteer Firefighters Association.

“They do have a place to store it and they are prepared to keep up maintenance,” said Keith Green, fire chief.

City staff had recommended earlier this year that the truck be sold for salvage, but council instructed staff to consider options for preserving the vehicle.

Green believes transferring ownership to the association makes sense.

“Many volunteer hours were dedicated to its restoration,” he said, adding that the truck will remain a community asset.

“There will be an opportunity to see it in parades and at other events.”

It had been suggested the city could receive $10,000 after commission if the truck had been sold for scrap.
