The new fitness equipment in Polson Park is ready to use, and Greater Vernon Parks and Recreation wants to make sure people get the information they need to use it properly.

“People tend to just dive into an exercise routine and get injured or discouraged,” said Denise McMahon, with the parks department.

“It’s important to slide into this at a pace your body can adjust to,” she told the class at an orientation session.

The department is offering free orientations on how to use the new fitness equipment, led by McMahon.

Six registered participants, along with a few onlookers, listened as McMahon explained how to use each piece of equipment properly, as well as why it is important to incorporate workout routines like this into your life.

“It’s about staying functionally active,” she said, adding that most people there would not be training for a marathon.

“People miss out on so much because of their limitations.”

The circuit of machines in the park are primarily for strength training and balance training which strengthens your core.

There are three more orientation sessions scheduled for Aug. 22 from 9 to 9:45 a.m., Sept. 10 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and Sept. 14 from 6 to 6:45 p.m.
