Nearly a century ago, power generation existed on Fortune Creek near Armstrong.

Could it be done again?

The city is looking into the feasibility of a Hydro generation project on the creek.

A report commissioned by the city shows generic data taken from Okanagan water studies, though not site specific to Armstrong.

Mayor Chris Pieper said the report shows that a business plan for such a project would result in the city being close to breaking even.

“If we don’t get grants for the project, we’ll lose money, if we do, we make some,” said Pieper.

The mayor cautioned that before the project gets into any kind of design parameters, it would be prudent to find out how much water the city has.

A water assessment study is being conducted by the city over the next year.

Council agreed to receive more information on the proposed power project for its next meeting.

Sprucing up Smith Drive

A Vernon company has been awarded the contract for beautifying Smith Drive.

Su Casa Sustainable Landscaping has been tapped to spruce up the main road into the city.

Among the work to be done by the company will be removing an existing garden bed, lumber, shrubs and irrigation on the south side of Smith Drive, and grade for a new garden bed and dry-stacked boulder wall.

Street closed for bike rodeo

Council voted unanimously to close Bridge Street from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, between  city hall and the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club Community Centre.

This will accommodate the third annual Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce Celebrate Canada Children’s Bike Rodeo and Block Party.

The free family event feature a bike rodeo, helmet fitting and bicycle safety check by RCMP and community policing volunteers. Kids will have an opportunity to decorate their bikes before participating in a bike parade.

Smokies and beverages will be provided by the boys and girls club.

Council also granted permission to the chamber to utilize the parking lot between its building and the museum, and the parking lot south of the Odd Fellows Hall.
