Future of Foothills park long-term

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee is looking at the feasibility of a park

A proposed park will be kept on the books but that doesn’t mean any action will take place.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has decided to keep the concept of a park in the Foothills area in the long-term inventory.

“This is not a direction to start a park,” said David Sewell, Regional District of North Okanagan chief administrative officer.

“It’s a long-term area.”

The Foothills Community Association has asked GVAC to establish a plan to buy 19.5 hectares of private land for park if it’s put up for sale.

However, director Mike Macnabb has questions about the process given that the site is owned by three different people and is outside of the Foothills development area.

“It’s extremely problematic how this would play out and prices are outrageous,” he said.

Director Bob Fleming isn’t sure if there should be a regional park there or if it should be limited to Vernon, because the land is in city limits.

“It has the potential for being a local park as part of a subdivision,” he said.

“It doesn’t have much potential as a destination park because it’s steep.”

However, others are interested in pursuing the matter further.

“I see this as being an awesome sub-regional park,” said Juliette Cunningham, GVAC chairperson.

Director Jim Garlick supports referencing the property in the parks inventory for possible future action.

“It’s a vision and we can get a strategy in place so when (residential) development happens there, we know what can take place,” he said.
