With a provincial election just around the corner, B.C. Liberal transportation ministry is reminding Central Okanagan drivers of work done to to improve Westside Road over the last eight years.
The long and winding road on the west side of Okanagan Lake from West Kelowna to the the intersection with Highway 97, northwest of the Vernon, has been voted the worst road in B.C. in the past by drivers participating in provincial BCAA poll.
Currently, a 1.2 kilometres stretch, between Four MileCreek and Waterfront Farms, north of the Westside Road interchange in West Kelowna is being widened and realigned.
According to the ministry, over the last eight years, work on the road has included:
• Shoulder widening and pullout construction, plus over 30 km of resurfacing.
• Work on a 500-metre section between Blue Grouse to Jenny Creek which widened the road to include a paved shoulder and the improvement of rock catchment ditches in areas of potential rock fall.
• Cinnabar Creek focused on 280 metres of a narrow two-lane section and the realignment of 2 curves and replacement of a 600m culvert.
• Waterfront Farms to Blue Grouse which focused on the widening and realignment of an 800 metre section of the road. Construction included: road base reconstruction, resurfacing, the addition of paved shoulders and rock fall protection.
