The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce believes opportunities can arise from a public purchase of a rail corridor.
Several jurisdictions have an agreement to purchase the Canadian National rail line between Coldstream and Kelowna.
“This is great news for the region as it secures a transportation corridor that will enhance the quality of life in the region for generations,“ said Jaron Chasca, chamber president.
“We appreciate there are some hurdles to cross but we want to push the local governments in the region to look at this through the lens of economic development. That means planning for links that could connect the route to existing businesses and services in communities throughout the valley and incorporating compatible private sector business development opportunities into any long range planning for the corridor.”
An economic impact study competed for the Okanagan Rail Trail Initiative indicated that the proposed trail would generate millions of dollars every year in additional economic spinoffs in the region.
