Two hit-and-run incidents involving Vernon school children have police issuing caution reminders to drivers and pedestrians.
On Nov. 21, at 8:40 a.m., police were alerted about a hit-and-run by the principal at Ellison Elementary after learning of the school’s students had been struck by a vehicle while in the crosswalk at 27th Avenue and Allenby Way.
“A six-year-old was struck by a vehicle at the intersection while walking to school,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “He was in the crosswalk when a four-door sedan came down Allenby from the direction of Heritage Drive towards 27th Avenue.”
The child was knocked back onto his backpack. He received no injuries and walked on to school.
The woman driver, as described by witnesses to police, has a darker complexion, possibly of First Nations or East Indian descent, is a little heavierset and was wearing clear-rimmed glasses with tinted or dark lenses.
The driver did not stop and continued on, and may be unaware that she hit somebody.
“Witnesses report the back window was covered with frost and there is some conflict as to the colour of the sedan, it was either beige or light blue,” said Molendyk.
The next morning, Nov. 22, shortly before 9 a.m., a seven-year-old girl was walking to school in the 3500 block of 20th Avenue when she was struck by a pickup truck backing out of a driveway.
The girl, said Molendyk, was very lucky as another student – possibly her sister – pulled her out of the way. She received only a minor scratch.
The driver, a man, was not aware he had hit the girl until police spoke to him later.
No charges were laid in that incident.
Both incidents serve as reminders that drivers need to be more vigilant at this time of year regarding pedestrians.
“Clean your windows and remember that stopping distances increase with frost on the road and it’s getting dark earlier now,” said Molendyk, who also reminded pedestrians to use safety precautions when walking the streets.
“Pedestrians should try to wear clothing with reflective material or carry a light so they can be seen. Everybody needs to be well aware of each other.”
Police would like to speak to the driver of the car involved in the incident at Allenby Way and 27th Avenue. Anybody with any information can call the Vernon detachment at 250-545-7171.
