Hotel unveils plans for city

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott moves into Vernon

Development of a new hotel is expected to have significant spin-offs for Vernon’s economy.

Construction is expected to begin soon on a four-storey, 98-room Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott on Anderson Way, with it open by fall 2012.

“It shows confidence in our market,” said Kevin Poole, the city’s economic development manager.

The $10 million project will create up to 75 construction jobs and 25 full-time positions once the hotel is open.

It’s anticipated that 85 per cent of construction and supplier contracts will go to Okanagan-based companies.

The hotel will include an indoor pool, a fitness room, a business centre and meeting rooms.

“It will serve another segment of the hospitality market,” said Poole. “There will be corporate travellers and they have great exposure from the highway.”

Poole expects the hotel will also draw people visiting Silver Star and the adjacent Lake City Casino.

It could also lead to additional hotel room tax revenue for the city, which goes into marketing the community.

The Fairfield Inn will be constructed and owned by Vernon-based Hollypark Organization and operated under a franchise agreement with Marriott International.
