Vernon RCMP are becoming familiar with a downtown home.

Less than a week after an officer suffered minor injuries chasing a suspect at a home in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue, another officer was allegedly assaulted at the same residence.

An officer from the downtown enforcement unit noticed a suspect believed to be involved in the drug trade leave the home at around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“When our officer approached the man and attempted to arrest him on drug-related charges, he resisted arrest and fled towards the Vernon Recreation Complex,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

A second officer arrived and chased the suspect who, police said, was attempting to get rid of items he was carrying while running away.

The discarded items were recovered and are believed to be heroin and cocaine.

After the arrest, police also recovered two cell phones, more than $2,000 in cash and a quantity of suspected heroin and cocaine.

A 21-year-old suspect is facing charges of trafficking in a controlled substance, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

“This is the second time in less than a week our officers have been assaulted by individuals associated with this residence,” said Molendyk.
