Housing construction continues to experience challenges in the Vernon area.
According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, there were 22 new home starts in July, a 31 per cent decrease from 32 starts during the same month in 2010.
Of the 22 starts, there were 18 single-detached units (20 in 2010) and four multiple units (12 last year).
Year-to-date, there have been 87 housing starts in Vernon, a 44 per cent decrease from the first seven months of 2010.
Elsewhere in the region, housing starts were up 170 per cent in Kelowna in July while they were up 95 per cent in Kamloops and down 71 per cent in Penticton.
Nationally, hosing starts increased to 205,100 units in July from 196,600 units in June.
