Hundreds remember Terry Fox

Including Vernon's own Andrew Allen, who showed up to sing the national anthem

Some hometown talent showed up to kick off a successful 32nd year of the Terry Fox Run.

Andrew Allen made a surprise visit to the annual event at Coldstream Elementary Sunday, singing the national anthem for the 329 participants.

“We were very lucky to get Andrew; it helps to know people that know people,” said Diana Williamson, run co-organizer.

Supporters also made a substantial impact with their donations at the event totalling $7,796 (that number is anticipated to rise to $9,000 as additional business donations are collected).

“The 32nd annual Terry Fox was a success with amazing weather,” said Williamson.

The family-friendly event drew runners and walkers – both two- and four-legged, strollers, cyclers and more.

“A huge thank you to all the volunteers, the Vernon Vipers, Kal Rats who oversaw the route, Andrew Allen for singing the anthem, Consie Severson for the run warm up, Queen and Princess Silver Star who oversaw the silent auction and face painting and Okanagan Dove Release who released 32 white doves just prior to the run to celebrate the 32nd annual run,” said Williamson. “Also Coopers, Gatzke Farms, Cobbs Bread and Tim Hortons for donating the food.”

The 33rd Annual Terry Fox Run takes place Sept. 15, 2013
