Illegal hunting of moose continues

Three more illegally shot moose have North Okanagan conservation officers asking for the public’s help.

Three more illegally shot moose have conservation officers asking for the public’s help.

A cow moose and two calves were shot and killed near Tappen, in the Shuswap, in the White Lake/Perry Creek area on the weekend, bringing to 15 the total number of illegal kills in the zone, which encompasses Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kelowna.

“Obviously not legitimate hunters,” said Sgt. Josh Lockwood of the killings of the cow and two calves on the weekend. “They were shot and left for no reason, or no reason we know of. We’re not even sure it’s a case of mistaken identity because the two calves, as I understand it, were together.

“That would be somebody out indiscriminately killing wildlife.”

Lockwood said of the 15 illegal moose kills in the zone, three investigations have concluded successfully, and two more have persons of interest and remain under investigation.

Six moose have illegally been killed in the Shuswap.

“Salmon Arm residents are calling our office concerned about the number of moose being shot and left,” said Lockwood.

There have been two illegal kills in the Falkland area and five in Kelowna.

Anybody with any information on the shootings in the White Lake/Perry Creek area, or on any of the cases, is asked to call 1-877-952-7277, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
