A new fire chief is coming on duty in Vernon.

David Lind is Interim Chief of Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) beginning Wednesday Nov. 23.

Lind brings 25 years of emergency management experience to his new role. His experience, education and proven skills include management, leadership, firefighting, rescue, fire protection, emergency medical services, community emergency programs, emergency medical services and hazardous materials response.

Prior to joining VFRS, Lind was an emergency services advisor for the Methenex Corporation, the deputy fire chief of operations in Medicine Hat, Alta., and the deputy director of fire and emergency services in Cranbrook, B.C.

“This an exciting opportunity,” said Lind. “VFRS has a reputation for providing excellent service to the community and I’m coming into the service at a time when I’ll be able to help shape plans that will build on this success well into the future.”

Lind’s philosophies for emergency management include ensuring that crews are provided with the resources for mental readiness as well as physical readiness, particularly when responding to critical incidents.

“Our people are our biggest resource and biggest asset,” said Lind. “Mental readiness ensures we are as strong as we can be.”

Lind will assume the role as one of the two deputy chiefs once Chief Keith Green returns to his duties with VFRS.

A shift in administration at VFRS was uncovered last week, which included Lawrie Skolrood stepping down as deputy chief.
