Vernon could become home to one of the world’s most celebrated sports events.

The Morning Star has learned the City of Vernon has been invited to bid for Ironman Canada.

“We are looking for a new home for Ironman Canada,” said Steve Meckfessel, with the World Triathlon Corporation, the owner and organizer of the event.

“Vernon kept popping up on the shortlist as well as did Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler.”

Ironman has been held in Penticton for 30 years but the South Okanagan community is entering into a new triathlon relationship with Challenge Family next year.

City of Vernon officials are currently investigating the possibility of hosting Ironman and a staff report will be presented to council Sept. 10.

More than 2,700 people participated in this year’s Penticton Ironman.

Bids for the 2013 Ironman, and subsequent years, must be submitted to the WTC by Sept. 24.
