Fundraising for the Okanagan Rail Trail remains on track.

Kal Tire hosted a garage sale at its corporate office in Vernon Saturday and $8,785 was raised for development of a recreational corridor from Coldstream to Kelowna. Kal Tire then topped this up with an additional $5,000 for a total of $13,785.

“The garage sale provides a great example of a business supporting their staff and community initiatives,” said Laurie Postill, with the Okanagan Rail Trail Initiative.

Since the funds will be contributed during an October donation matching campaign launched by some local residents, this will result in a total of $27,571 towards rail trail construction.

In addition, $10,400 from Vernon’s 100 Men who Give a Damn was received at the garage sale event, and will also be matched in the October campaign.

“There are so many people to thank”, said Kevin McCarty, Kal Tire’s corporate social responsibility co-ordinator.

“Thanks go to Kal Tire’s team, rail trail volunteers, the Community Foundation of North Okanagan, the Vernon Outdoors Club, Save On Foods, Coldstream Creek Orchards and the many people who donated goods or purchased items at the sale.”

Donated entertainment and kids activities came from Natalie Ingram, Marv Machura, Bounce Hire Inflatables and the Woida family.

The October matching campaign has raised more than $300,000, with the matching target set at $500,000.
