Now that spring and its warmer weather has arrived in the North Okanagan, the local constabulary is, again, issuing a couple of important reminders.
The first involves the annual appearance of what’s known as the “Green Thumb Burglar.”
“This is a person who will take advantage of people who are out gardening and because the weather is so nice, have left their doors and windows open to let in the fresh air while they’re out working in the yard,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
“This creates the crime of opportunity for individuals to be in and out of your house quickly and undetected. Sometimes it is hours or a day before you realize some items from your home have been stolen.”
“Keep doors and windows locked while you’re in your backyards, and pay attention to suspicious activity in your neighbourhoods.”
Police are also reminding residents to not leave valuable items in their vehicles.
Over the weekend, officers responded to about half-a-dozen thefts from vehicles where people left their valuables in the car.
“Several vehicles were not even locked up,” said Molendyk, adding that the thefts occurred in both city and rural areas.
