Road crews on Highway 97 at the Summerland landslide say children using walkie-talkies are interfering with radio channels and disrupting work on Wednesday, June 28.
AIM Roads in a Facebook post said they have received such reports and have asked those disrupting to change channels on their devices.
“When crews change the channels, the children follow and continue to disrupt,” they wrote on Wednesday afternoon. “This was occurring after school hours, however, today it has been first thing in the morning.”
Construction crews have attended the site of a pair of recent landslides just south of Summerland since May.
Highway 97 in the area has since closed multiple times for blasting, including on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m.
Crews have been working to take away unstable materials for weeks, with the area just south of Summerland down to one lane, both ways.
AIM Roads is asking parents to talk to their kids with walkie-talkies and to ensure they know to not interrupt radio talk from construction crews.
“This has major negative impacts and is a safety hazard to our crews, radio channels must be reserved for road crews and their activities at this location.”
