Landmark tree is coming down in Vernon

City officials concerned the tree is in poor condition and could be a safety risk

A well-known tree in Vernon only has a few hours left.

On Tuesday, crews will remove the heartnut tree between city hall and the museum.

“The core of the trunk has deteriorated and turned punk (in the process of rotting),” said Will Pearce, chief administrative officer.

‘What is holding the tree up is a fairly narrow band of living material just below the bark. The structural integrity of the tree is very poor. For public safety the tree must come down.”

It’s not known how old the tree is, but it has been a popular place for people to sit and relax. Children have also been known to climb the limbs over the years.
