Some volunteers will get a break when it comes to criminal record checks.
Vernon council has decided to provide a 75 per cent discount for criminal record checks for people who receive financial assistance. The full fee is $25.
“I would have preferred no charge for that group of volunteers,” said Coun. Juliette Cunningham, adding that they are wanting to be active in the community and even a reduced fee could be financially challenging.
“They are volunteering for another group.”
Mayor Rob Sawatzky believes the policy is simply a starting point.
“We could change this in the future if we felt we needed to,” he said.
To be eligible for the 75 per cent discount, an individual must receive financial assistance from regular income assistance benefits, persons with disability, persons with persistent and multiple barriers, Canadian pension disability or the guaranteed income supplement for seniors.
