Civillians keep wildfire at bay until firefighters got there

A wildfire sparked in Lumby Wednesday proves fire season is far from over, despite the recent lift in the campfire ban.

The blaze was sparked in the 700 block of Creighton Valley Road shortly before 1 p.m.

“It had the potential,” said fire chief Tony Clayton. “It was on the side of the road and it was heading uphill. It was steep and rough terrain.”

But some quick actions by civilians are being credited for helping to keep the fire from growing before crews arrived.

“They kept it bay until we got there,” said Clayton. “One of the neighbours had a back deck sprayer and they were using shovels and sticks and anything they could.”

A total of 13 firefighters showed up with one engine, two tenders and bush truck.

“We’re not taking any chances,” said Clayton. “It’s still dry out there.”

The Ministry of Forests and RCMP were also on scene but the blaze is not deemed suspicious.

“It’s definitely human-caused,” said Clayton.

While campfires are now permitted in Lumby and rural areas, this fire sparks a reminder to be extra cautious.

“We ask that people only burn if they definitely have to and be cautious when they do.”
