Smokers will have to butt out in areas popular with children in Lumby.
Council adopted a bylaw Tuesday that permits signs to be installed that prohibits smoking around locations frequented by children.
“We were receiving complaints about smoking around children and we addressed that issue,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.
In areas where adults are predominant, smoking will be allowed even if some people are offended by cigarette smoke.
All I have heard was really good comments about this,” said Coun. Lori Mindnich.
“People have said this is a really good idea.”
Mindnich suffers from respiratory issues and understands concerns about second-hand smoke but she doesn’t believe there will be an issue in parks.
“I’ll just pick a place to stand (away from smoke),” she said.
“Most smokers are really good and they will put it out or they will move somewhere else.”
Acton admits the village is trying to find a compromise between smokers and non-smokers.
“We’re trying not to be too heavy-handed,” he said.
However, he expects the issue of smoking will eventually have to be revisited.
“There is support from some in the community for an all-out ban on smoking period,” said Acton.
“There are still issues that we will need to deal with.”
