Lumby is the hockey capital of Canada.
People flooded the surface of Pat Duke Memorial Arena Saturday when it was announced the village had won the coveted Kraft Hockeyville title.
“It feels incredible,” said Angie Clowry, who spearheaded Lumby’s bid.
“I was really confident because of our entire community and everyone across Canada that voted for us. We might be a small community but we run really deep.”
Along with the title, Lumby, which beat out Saint-Isidore, Que., will host a pre-season NHL game.
Residents of Lumby and the North Okanagan rallied to get Lumby nominated for the top 10, and when that occurred, voting resumed to have Lumby named one of the two finalists.
Being a finalist automatically led to Lumby capturing $100,000 for upgrades to Pat Duke Memorial Arena.
CBC and Sportsnet crews were in Lumby to capture the reaction to the announcement Saturday.
