An Enderby road continues to crumble away.
A section of asphalt broke away on Mabel Lake Road last weekend and now a second area has been identified as an issue.
“The ministry is aware of the situation and had a geotechnical engineer on site yesterday afternoon to do an assessment,” the Ministry of Transporation and Infrastructure told The Morning Star. “This site is located approximately 15 km east of Enderby. There is also a second location about four kilometres away that has a diagonal crack across both lanes that is being assessed as well.”
Traffic control is on scene as the initial section of roadway has been reduced to single-lane alternating traffic.
“Work to repair the road will begin as soon as a solution has been identified for both of these sites,” states the ministry. “In the interim, 24-hour traffic control and night time illumination will continue.”

An ongoing road problem has resurfaced in Enderby.
A section of Mabel Lake Road has sloughed away, putting one lane out of commission. The portion of road is before the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre and has been reduced to single-lane alternating traffic. The road is not expected to be fixed for most of the week but traffic control personnel are on scene 24/7.
“The asphalt has broken away and sunken down six to eight inches,” said Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo, who was on site Monday but says the pavement started dropping slowly two or three days ago.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure were on scene Tuesday with geotech to investigate and come up with a plan to rebuild the road.
But this isn’t the first time there has been an issue on Mabel Lake Road.
“I’ve been complaining about it for quite some time,” said Herman Halvorson, rural Enderby director. “It’s been a problem for years. Every spring it has bad conditions.”
Another section of the road had issues last year, said Kyllo, noting that this year has been particularly tough on roads. “We’ve certainly had extraordinary freezing and thawing over this winter.”
