Memories walk raises $27,000

More than 140 people came out for the Investors Group Walk for Memories at the Wesbild Centre Sunday

More than 140 people came out for the Investors Group Walk for Memories at the Wesbild Centre Sunday.

“Our goal was $25,000 and we raised more than $27,000,” said Stella Brassard, volunteer event co-chairperson along with Jan Mori.

“We’ve noticed that many people are loyal supporters of the walk and keep coming back year after year. And we have so many great volunteers to put it all together.”

“Our honouree, Ron Houston, and his wife, Beth, were there and they got a wonderful surprise. Their son, Robert, flew in to be there to support them.”

Participants ended the event with the “Alzheimer hug,” a short exercise that is good for everyone. Instructions: Get a partner. Put hands on your own shoulders so that elbows are sticking out in front of you. Touch one of your partner’s opposite elbows to yours, then the other elbows touch. Partners high-five both hands above heads. Have a big hug.

The Investors Group Walk for Memories was held in 24 communities around the province.

Recent findings from a national survey indicate low awareness of the early signs of Alzheimer disease and other dementias is causing a delay in diagnosis and subsequent treatment gap for people with the illness.

Proceeds from the Investors Group Walk for Memories help provide information, services and support for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families around the province.

The funds also help with research for the cause of and a cure for dementia of all kinds.
