Meth lab ends in prison term

Nearly three years after arrests were made, a sentence was issued against one of the accused in the case of a large-scale methamphetamine lab near Lumby.

Michael Antonio Doherty, 42, pleaded guilty in Vernon Supreme Court to one count of production of a controlled substance.

Doherty was sentenced by Judge Alison Beames to 29 months in jail, but was given credit for two months served,  and was given a 10-year firearms prohibition.

Doherty, originally from the United Kingdom, was also ordered deported from Canada upon his release from prison.

Crown stayed 13 other counts against Doherty, and also stayed 14 counts against the co-accused in the matter, Trisha Lyn Brown, 34, as part of a plea agreement.

Doherty and Brown were arrested in late April 2008 when RCMP searched a property with a warrant on Bear Valley Road east of Lumby.

It took three days for RCMP to dismantle the illegal lab, which police said was producing drugs for financial gain, and not personal use.
