Ministry provides Hullcar response

Farmers expressed concerns about abatement orders at Spallumcheen council Monday.

The Ministry of Environment has responded to the concerns of Hullcar farmers.

The farmers expressed concerns about abatement orders at Spallumcheen council Monday.

“Government is working with the local community and taking all necessary actions to ensure the residents using Hullcar aquifer have safe drinking water, while preserving the region’s agricultural economy,” said the ministry in a statement.

“Based on recent inspections and water quality information, an independent statutory decision maker determined there were reasonable grounds to believe these operations are contributing to the elevated nitrate levels in Hullcar aquifer.”

According to the ministry, the Hullcar valley farmers were provided with an opportunity to respond to the draft abetment orders before the final orders were issued.

“Ministry staff are available to respond to queries from the recipients of the orders.”
