Mother and cub in Armstrong school yard killed

Conservation officers forced to destroy bears, which have become a nuisance in the area

The mother bear and her cub hanging out at Armstrong Elementary have been destroyed.

RCMP received report of the bears in the school yard Thursday morning and following precautions to keep children and area residents safe, conservation officers killed the bears.

“She (the mother) was a young bear, very undernourished,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. “They probably would not have done well if they could even attempt to move them.”

Along with teaching her cub to dig through trash, the mother bear had become accustomed to humans and was therefore not afraid.

“They had been a problem for a while.”

Since there is currently no room in rehabilitation centres for bears, conservation officers determined that the best course of action was to destroy the bears.
