Nearly $29 million paid in City of Vernon salaries

Draft shows nearly 70 employees made more than $100K in 2022

City of Vernon staff collected nearly $29 million in salary in 2022.

It’s one of the items contained in the 100-page draft of the city’s annual report.

“The report is a combination of a lot of information,” said city director of financial services Debra Law, adding the city is noted for its reporting of its activities, having won a national award in 2021.

“The report includes a variety of information pertaining to 2022, including the audited financial statements and statistical information.”

There are three main sections to the annual report – the introduction, the financial section and the statistical documents.

Staff made $28,830,017 in 2022, and claimed nearly $445,000 in expenses. Close to 70 employees made $100,000 or more.

Topping the list was former chief administrative officer Will Pearce, now retired, at $255,132.

Earnings of employees who made less than $75,000 added up to a total of $12,168,175.

The report also lists council remuneration and expenses for 2022.

Mayor Victor Cumming was on top with $105,556 in salary and $3,141 in expenses claimed. Coun. Kelly Fehr was paid $39,671 with $1,806 in expenses. Akbal Mund and Brian Quiring made $38,133 with Quiring claiming $2,651 in expenses, compared to $1,504 for Mund.

Teresa Durning’s remuneration for 2022 was $38,466 with $2,464 in expenses, and Kari Gares made $37,890 with $3,482 in expenses.

Brian Guy, elected to council in October 2022, made $4,810 and claimed no expenses. Former councillor Scott Anderson made $33,321, and claimed $3,631 in expenses.

The report also includes a summary of council’s strategic plan, its vision for recreation, parks, and natural spaces, and looks at affordable and attainable housing.

Citizens are invited to attend the city’s Annual General Meeting to be held on Monday, June 26, at city hall, where the report will be officially presented. The meeting will begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. following the regular council meeting.

There will also be an opportunity for citizens to make submissions and ask questions regarding the report.
