New North Okanagan dock coming to Kal Beach

Popular pier to be replaced due to deterioration

A new dock is on the books for Kal Beach.

While it won’t be in place this summer, the new structure will replace the deteriorating Rotary Pier.

The dock was built in 2008 and in 2018, the ‘T’ portion of the pier was broken off of its piles due to flooding. In 2019, the piles were modified slightly to allow for the deck section to be replaced.

In 2022, emergency repairs were necessary after a rotted piling caused a small portion of the deck to partially collapse.

A condition assessment of the pier in 2022 cited several potential pile failures and issues with weathering and aging of the decking materials.

“As such, the district is seeking proposals from qualified contractors to either reconstruct or rehabilitate the pier in roughly the same size and shape as it is currently, though alternative configurations may be considered,” the district of Coldstream said in its request for proposals (RFP).

There is a $485,000 budget for replacement.

It is likely the new dock won’t be wood.

“Damage from the sun/water reduces the lifespan of wood components, alternative decking and pile materials should be considered, and added into the lifecycle costs for the structure,” the district RFP reads.

Construction will take place outside of the popular summer beach season, mid‐September at the earliest.

The district would like to see it completed no later than Dec. 1.
