Hillcrest Elementary principal Alan Harrison will not be wearing his clown costume at the school for Halloween this year.

North Okanagan Shuswap School District #83 will not be allowing creepy clown costumes on school grounds for Halloween.

"As you may be aware, there has been recent events surrounding the pranks and threat related activity connected to individuals dressed up as creepy clowns locally and internationally.

"Some school districts are not allowing clown costumes to be worn in schools or on school property. That is the position we will be taking this year. We believe that this decision is in the best interest of our students, staff, and our district," said a district press release.

"If anyone shows up in a related costume or brandishing a fake weapon, they will be asked to change/remove item or be sent home."

The decision was made based on consultation with Safer Schools.
