North Okanagan riders racked up thousands of kilometres during this year’s GoByBike Week.
A total of 913 Vernon and North Okanagan riders and 91 teams joined others from across the province in riding their bikes, scooters, skateboards and other small wheels during spring GoByBike Week from May 29 to June 4.
In a press release, the City of Vernon thanked participants who rode during the week and joined the challenge.
In all, North Okanagan riders rode 34,028 kilometres and saved 7,377 kilograms of greenhouse gases by choosing to travel by active transportation.
“Vernon riders were enthusiastic this spring; it was great to see so many riders out during the week and at our events. We’re especially thrilled that 449 of the 913 riders joined us for the first time this spring,” said Anne Huisken, active transportation coordinator.
GoByBike Week fits into the City of Vernon’s larger strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to make active transportation the first choice to move around the city.
This year, 37 riders won prizes. Maite Castillo won the local grand prize of a new bike, a 29” Titan Racing Rogue, donated by Satoca Bike. Linda Richard and Dave Meise won Neuron Mobility gift packs worth $250 each. Jeffrey Palatnick, Dave Street, and a Trail Ninja (from the North Okanagan Cycling Society Youth program) each won a $100 Olympia gift card. Amber Arnold won the Vernon Bike Prize Trail.
GoByBike Week is organized across B.C. by the GoByBike BC Society, with the support of sponsors including the province, BC Transit, Exodus Travels, Black Press Media and ICBC.
