North Okanagan-Shuswap trustee holds first meeting

A report looking into the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District has been released.

A report that led to the firing of the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District board is being acted on.

Mike McKay, who was recently named trustee by the Ministry of Education, received special advisor Liz Watson's report into the district at his first board meeting Tuesday.

He said the report was comprehensive and included 42 recommendations, the first of which was acted upon by the ministry when it dissolved the board.

"The remaining 41 recommendations are hard hitting across a wide range of areas."

He added the report consists of recommendations and not requirements but it must be taken seriously and work has started to "lay out the landscape" and develop some processes to tackle the substantial work load set out in the report.

He added that some of the recommendations are not within the district's mandate to activate.

"We may be guided by the intent but we can't tell the government what to do."

He says there will be regular updates on the progress towards meeting the recommendations.

"I can assure you it will be dealt with seriously and transparently
