“Having two photos named as finalists and winning a gold and bronze at the awards ceremony held on Saturday in Richmond was very much an honour, especially being recognized by your peers in the industry,” said Brett. “This was actually our second gold award in as many years in the highest circulation class of the Ma Murray’s which I think speaks to the quality of our newspaper and what we provide to our readership.”

Brett has over 40 years of experience in the newspaper business. He has won multiple Canadian Community Newspaper Association Awards and Mu Murray Awards. He has also been honoured with a Canadian Press Award and a Black Press Award.

“We are lucky to have such an outstanding photographer on our editorial team. Mark is so skilled at his craft that his photos can tell a story on their own. His photos elevate the news, community events and sports that the Western News delivers to the readers,” said Kristi Patton, editor of the Penticton Western News.

Judges said Brett’s sports photo has “great impact” and “the action is palpable.”

“Great capture. In a field of great images this one was a clear winner,” said the judges in their review of the winning photo.

The Ma Murray Awards honour excellence in more than 40 award categories across print and digital platforms. The Western News won gold in the multimedia breaking news category at the 2018 Ma Murray Awards.
