Ormsby residence gone

Coldstream has lost an historic home.

Following the multi-million dollar private sale of the Ormsby property this summer, the house was recently torn down.

“There’s nothing left,” said Coldstream Coun. Gyula Kiss, after walking by the deserted property.

The District of Coldstream had hoped to purchase the Ormsby home and property on Coldstream Creek Road due to its significance as well as location. The prime piece of property could have extended existing public waterfront and parkland from the Mackie and Sovereign properties.

Although Margaret Ormsby’s will noted that the district should have first opportunity to buy the property, and they did, Coldstream’s offer was refused. Being a prime piece of lakefront property, it was listed on the open market for $5.9 million. It has sold and is now in private hands, where there are plans to construct another residence.

A historian, Ormsby grew up in the home with her parents George and Maggie and following retirement she moved back into it.
