Pay cut for absent Spallumcheen council members

Any council member who now misses more than four regular meetings a year will lose half of their salary.

The financial hammer is dropping on Spallumcheen politicians who are tardy.

Any council member who now misses more than four regular meetings a year will lose half of their salary.

“We’ve had challenges with attendance,” said Mayor Janice Brown.

“It’s a commitment and we expect you to be here Mondays for meetings. Sometimes we’re on the phone trying to see if we will have a quorum.”

Brown insists the policy is not directed towards any particular individual and it will set clear guidelines for anyone considering running for council in November.

“This is not about being sick, it’s about holidays,” she said.

Presently, the mayor receives $18,819 a year, while each of the six councillor gets $9,410 annually.
