Photos: Little riders steal the show at Okanagan Granfondo weekend

Hundreds of kids of all ages participated in the Piccolofondo on Saturday

Three hundred young riders took over Lakeshore Drive on Saturday morning for the annual Piccolofondo kids’ race.

Riders as young as one-year-old up to tweens participated in the Piccolofondo race in front of just as many cheering fans including several parent cyclists who then participated in the Granfondo the next day.

The Piccolofondo is part of the Granfondo experience to encourage kids to get into cycling but in Penticton, the race has exploded in popularity, growing every year.

The Granfondo group sets up the official start and finish line and has volunteers helping keep the riders on the course.

The following day, on Sunday, it was the adults’ turn to race.

Around 3,000 riders rose early to get their spot in line on Main Street for 7 a.m. to participate in the Okanagan Granfondo. This year, the course didn’t go through Highway 97 to Summerland but instead focused on South Okanagan, through Naramata and down to Okanagan Falls, Oliver and Osoyoos.

The Okanagan Granfondo has been rated the best Granfondos in Canada.
