UPDATE: Park shooting investigated

Witnesses sought in brazen daytime shooting, injuring a 21-year-old Vernon man

Police are continuing their investigation into the Polson Park shooting that occurred yesterday afternoon and are asking witnesses who have yet to speak to police to come forward.

On Thursday, just after 1:30 p.m., Vernon RCMP received several reports that someone had been shot in Polson Park. Upon arrival, investigators discovered a man was suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was transported to hospital to be treated for what appeared to be serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The park which was initially closed and evacuated has since been fully reopened. The victim, a 21-year-old Vernon resident, remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police are continuing their investigation and believe this was a targeted incident. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this incident and who have yet to speak to police to contact the Vernon RCMP at 250-545-7171.

Witnesses, and a suspect, are being sought in a shooting in Polson Park Thursday afternoon.

Just after 1:30 p.m., Vernon RCMP received several reports that someone had been shot in Polson Park.

“Upon arrival at the scene, investigators discovered a male was suffering from a gunshot wound,” said Cpl. Janelle Shoihet, media relations officer. “He has since been transported to a local area hospital for treatment of what are believed to be serious but non-life threatening injuries.

“He is suffering from one gun-shot wound.”

The park was immediately closed and systematically evacuated to ensure public safety and to identify and speak with possible witnesses to this incident. Along with a number of families and individuals enjoying the park, W.L. Seaton graduation photos were taking place Thursday just prior to the incident.

An evidentiary search remains underway with assistance from the Integrated Police Dog Service. During this time areas of the park including the boardwalk, steps and walkway will remain inaccessible, while other areas of the park have re-opened.

RCMP with assistance from the General Investigations Section, are working to identify those responsible for the incident. If you have information or were a witness to this crime and have not already spoken to the RCMP, you are asked to call 250-545-7171 and cite file #2017-13984.
