Polson Park playground still closed

Polson Park's water park is reopened after some upgrades but the playground remains out of commission.

There’s good news and bad news in Polson Park.

The water park is reopened after some upgrades but the playground remains out of commission.

“At this point we can’t be sure as to when it will open,” said Tannis Nelson, with the Regional District of North Okanagan, referring to the play area.

Both the playground and the spray park were shut down Tuesday.

The primary issue with the playground was a lot of standing water that was creating odour issues.

“Crews repaired an irrigation leak but there is still water there,” said Nelson.

“We have brought in a hydrologist to see if there is ground water.”

Depending on what the hydrologist determines,   action may be required to improve drainage.

The spray park was closed so crews could complete the final improvements to a rubber surface installed this year.

“It eliminates a tripping hazard,” said Nelson, adding the surface also provides some fun features for children.

The new surface is made of recycled rubber and a grant was received from Tire Stewardship B.C.

Nelson admits closure of the spray park wasn’t ideal as hot weather has local residents scrambling to cool off.

“It’s back on,” she said of the popular attraction.
