People will soon be able to bring their dogs on a section of a popular North Okanagan trail.
The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) board passed a resolution at its meeting Wednesday, June 21, to allow dogs on-leash on the BX Creek Trail between Tillicum and Star roads.
The trail was designated as a no-dogs-allowed space when it was originally constructed and has remained that way to this day.
A report to the board notes the BX Creek Trail is currently the only section of trail within the Greater Vernon Trails and Natural Spaces Service that doesn’t allow dogs, other than trails located within a nature reserve.
“The current use by members of the public and their dogs would indicate that there is a strong public demand for this trail to be designated dogs on-leash,” the report states.
Staff indicate that there are no legal obstacles that would get in the way of changing the trail’s designation to allow dogs. In this case, changing the trail’s designation would simply require a change of trailhead signage, as no amendment to the dog control bylaw would be required.
The change to a dog-on-leash designation will have no impact on the current operating budget and will reduce the current demand on RDNO Dog Control, the report notes.
