A cinnamon coloured black bear gets into garbage Monday morning in the Palisade Mobile Park in Spallumcheen. The bear was destroyed.

A bear roaming around a Spallumcheen mobile home park mid-day Monday had to be destroyed.

North Okanagan conservation officer Tanner Beck said the two-year-old male bear was destroyed in the Palisades Mobile Home Park because it had become habituated to garbage from people leaving their garbage out.

“It started to associate people’s houses and trailers as a food source and was roaming around in the middle of the day which is not safe behaviour,” said conservation officer Tanner Beck.

Officers are asking all residents to take responsibility to manage their garbage.

“The last thing we want to have to do is kill any more bears,” said Beck. “It’s extremely frustrating.”
