Pump station receives upgrade

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has approved spending $240,000 at the McMechan pump station

Greater Vernon’s water utility will undergo a major upgrade.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has approved spending $240,000 for a new pump and replacement of electrical works at the McMechan pump station.

“This is a very good way of saving some money,” said director Mike Macnabb, adding that the project will save about $30,000 a year in electricity costs.

Delivery, fabrication and installation will begin immediately as there is a tight timeline to have the work done.

“Peak water system demands occur each summer at the pump station due to increased irrigation demands placed on the overall system,” said Zee Marcolin, Greater Vernon Water manager.

Caetani gets support

Taxpayers are providing much-needed financial assistance for a cultural organization.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee will provide $10,700 to the Caetani Cultural Centre for electrical upgrades and a furnace replacement.

“They are in a backlog of maintenance. There is catch-up to do,” said Tannis Nelson, GVAC’s community development co-ordinator.

GVAC will also provide the Caetani Cultural Centre with $7,500 for grounds maintenance during 2014.
