A police officer happened to be at the right place at the right time Wednesday.
One of the Vernon detachment’s dog handlers was on 31st Street at 7 p.m. when he heard a report of two alleged shoplifters running from Superstore.
“He observed two people matching the description running south bound on the tracks,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.
“The officer quickly pulled over and noticed the suspects run and hide in the bushes along the railway tracks. The police service dog team ran down the tracks towards where the two suspects entered the bush.”
As he neared the scene, he yelled to the suspects that he had a dog and they were under arrest.
“Seconds later, both quickly came out and were happy to give up quietly and not have the police dog come and find them,” said Molendyk.
A 20-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were arrested and they are facing theft charges.
