Disaster was avoided with two separate vehicle fires this week.

A car caught fire in a garage on Old Kamloops Road Monday afternoon, which could have spread to a structure fire if it weren’t for the quick actions of those in the home.

“A light had dripped some plastic onto a rag top T-Bird,” said Steve Hidasi, BX-Swan Lake Fire Department assistant chief.

Those in the home, one of which happened to be a Vernon firefighter, quickly extinguished the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

BX crews were then called to another vehicle fire, this time up Silver Star Road Tuesday morning.

“A passerby having an extinguisher handy was able to extinguish it,” said Hidasi, of the Good Samaritan who happened to be a Silver Star firefighter.

While not putting themselves or anyone else at risk, the individuals saved the day.

“As a result both situations averted disaster,” said Hidasi.

“We praise the fast actions of these people involved.”
