Restaurant fire investigated

Vernon RCMP and fire departments trying to determine cause of fire at New Delhi Restaurant

A fire has closed a downtown Vernon restaurant for the time being.

Vernon RCMP were called by Vernon Fire Rescue Services shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday to attend to a fire inside the New Delhi Restaurant in the 2900 block of 29th Street.

“The sprinkler system had gone off so there is both fire and water damage in the building,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk Tuesday afternoon. “The owners of the business, and the building owners, have been notified.”

The City of Vernon owns the building.

The police and fire departments are working together to determine the cause of the fire and, as of Tuesday afternoon, nothing had been ruled out.

“The fire origin appears suspicious in nature and they continue to investigate it,” said Molendyk. It is not known how long the restaurant will be closed. Owners could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
