Ribbon cut on new Lake Country highway

The route between Oyama and Lake Country will open to motorists at 7 p.m. Friday.

Festivities are over and motorists will soon be using the Okanagan’s newest stretch of highway.

A ceremony was held Friday afternoon to make the official completion of the nine-kilometre, upper-level Highway 97 between Winfield and Oyama. The route will open to motorists at 7 p.m. Friday.

“Highway 97 will improve travel for residents and visitors by making transportation safer and more efficient,” said Norm Letnick, Kelowna- Lake Country MLA.

Residents and Lake Country politicians had been demanding a new route since 2006 because of a number of fatalities along the two-lane stretch of road along Wood Lake.

Construction of the $77.9 million new highway began two years ago.
