A notorious North Okanagan man with a history of crimes against sex trade workers has pleaded guilty to breaching his probation.
Curtis Sagmoen is before the courts on an 11-count information alleging a variety of breaches to his probation order, close to six years after the remains of a teenage girl were found on his rural property on Salmon River Road.
On Wednesday, June 28 at the Vernon Law Courts, Sagmoen’s lawyer, Lisa Helps, appeared by video to enter guilty pleas for her client. Sagmoen pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a cell phone, one count of possessing drugs and one count of breaching a no-contact order.
The charges date back to April 2022. Sagmoen was arrested on April 27 of that year, and while details as to what he did to breach his probation weren’t disclosed, he was under a lengthy court order to avoid contact with sex trade workers, among other conditions. Sagmoen was soon released on bail.
Sagmoen’s probation was set after he was convicted in February 2020 of assaulting a sex trade worker by hitting her with a quad at his property in August 2017. That conviction came two months before he was convicted of threatening a different sex trade worker with a firearm, also in August 2017.
Months after those offence dates, the remains of 18-year-old Traci Genereaux were discovered on Sagmoen’s property. No charges have been laid in connection to Genereaux’s death.
Sagmoen’s breach of probation and subsequent arrest came on the same day that a charge of assaulting a police officer was dropped after the Crown concluded the charge assessment standard was no longer met.
Sagmoen has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 30 to fix a date for sentencing on his four probation breaches.
