It’s hot out there, like heat stroke hot.

With Environment Canada issue a heat warning and predicting sustained high temperatures above 30 C for the next week, the City of Penticton is encouraging residents and visitors to stay safe by drinking plenty of water, staying cool and to check in on neighbours, especially the elderly.

“We want people to take precautions and be aware of the dangers from the heat,” says emergency program co-ordinator Brittany Seibert. “So that means drinking plenty of water, cover up as needed, apply sunscreen, go for a dip in the lakes and check in on your friends, family, seniors and neighbours. People can go into city facilities during regular operating hours to cool off as well. ”

For the kids and kids at heart

Take a dip in the lake, there are two to choose from and it’s free. There is no better way to cool down. Our beaches at Okanagan Lake and Skaha are packed but there is always room for more.

Float down the Channel, just make sure you keep cool on the lazy trip down the river.

There are a few splash pads to cool down:

* Rotary Playworld (at Skaha Park, corner of Cypress Street and Elm Avenue)

* Lakawanna Park, located across from Okanagan Beach, at 796 Lakeshore Drive West

Indoor walking track at SOEC:

The air condition of the SOEC makes a great location to take a walk on the .27 km track open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Go See A Movie:

Landmark Cinemas is a great place to relax and catch a good movie on the big screen. Here are some of the shows currently playing; Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Spider-Man- Across the Spider-Verse and Elemental.

For water access, there are several publicly accessible water bottle filling stations available. Bylaw officers and community safety officers will have bottled water for those needing a cool drink.

The City has made a list of 10 ways to beat the heat.
