A water main break near city hall led to a City of Vernon dump truck falling into a sinkhole.

A water main broke at approximately 1:30 am Thursday on 31st Street between 33rd Avenue and 34th Avenue, and crews turned off the water as soon as they were notified.

A detour was put in place and no vehicles except for those with the city were permitted through.

“When crews arrived on site this morning, one of the city trucks fell through the asphalt that may have been weakened by the water main break,” said City of Vernon communications officer Tanya Laing Gahr. “There were no prior outward signs of the cavity beneath the asphalt.”

Crews are expected to have the repairs completed on Friday. The road remains closed until the repairs are finished.
