There are more students in class than expected.
The Venron School District’s enrolment is up 99 students from a projected decline of 176, resulting in a net decline of 77 students from last year. That brings kindergarten to Grade 12 enrolment to 7,729 students.
“The board remains concerned about the declining enrolment but is hopeful that the trend continues to improve as is indicated in our forecasting reports,” said Bill Turanski, board chairperson.
Elementary enrolment has increased by 52 students and secondary by 47 students.
Alternate school and on-line enrolment is continuing to grow as mature students, upgrading students and home school students enroll in individual courses and programs. There are also 193 international students.
Total enrolment for all programs is 8,075 students.
“This increase in student enrolment combined with a small decline projected over the next few years is very positive news for the school district,” said Turanski.
“Given the improved enrolment numbers, the board of education has stated the district will not be closing schools for the 2014-2015 school term.”
Final enrolment numbers will be sent to the Ministry of Education at the beginning of October.
