There’s good news up in the mountains.

Downhill skiing officially gets underway for another season Thursday at Silver Star Mountain Resort.

“The lifts start loading happy skiers and snowboarders at 8:30 a.m. and run until 3:30pm.,” said Robin Baycroft, resort services manager.

The decision to open is a result of recent weather patterns leading to 72 centimetres of snow being at the top of the resort’s ski runs.

“Our grooming team has been out track-packing and grooming since early in the week and conditions are some of the best we’ve seen for an opening in years,” said Brad Baker, operations manager.

“We will have a great selection of beginner and intermediate runs open for Thursday and as more snow falls, we will be able to open more and more terrain.”

The Comet 6-Pack Express and Silver Queen lifts will be up and running for early-season skiers. As of press time, there will be 20 runs open and there will be six terrain park features set up in Middle Dipper.

The resort’s nordic trails have been open since Nov. 11, with more than 50 kilometres groomed for classic and skate skiing.
